The diagnosis came as a devastating blow, particularly as the family had already endured multiple cancer-related losses in recent years, including the deaths of Karl’s sister-in-law, grandmother, father and uncle.
Just five days later, their fears were confirmed. Karl was diagnosed with brain cancer that had originated in his lungs and spread. The cancer was already too advanced for treatment. Doctors estimated he had between three and six months to live without chemotherapy, with only a small increase in life expectancy if he chose to undergo treatment.
Faced with an impossible decision, Karl chose to focus on quality of life and making memories with his children rather than pursuing chemotherapy.
Unsure how to cope with the diagnosis and support Karl’s young children through what lay ahead, the family were introduced to Team Solan by a Macmillan nurse.
From their very first conversation, Team Solan recognised what mattered most.
Knowing time was precious, they suggested helping the family create special memories together. Within days, a five-day break to Windfall Forest had been arranged, complete with activities for Karl and his children. Understanding the urgency of the situation, Team Solan ensured the family could travel within weeks.
The holiday provided an opportunity for Karl and his children to enjoy experiences they had never had before and create memories that would last a lifetime.
The family describe the trip as one of the most meaningful gifts they could have received during such a difficult time. It provided laughter, togetherness and precious moments that were captured in photographs they continue to treasure.
Sadly, Karl passed away in May 2025, just four months after his diagnosis.
Throughout Karl’s illness and after his death, Team Solan continued to provide emotional and practical support. The family were given vouchers for days out, allowing them to spend quality time together and create further memories. Some of those outings included Karl before he became too unwell, while others helped the family find moments of comfort and distraction following his passing.
As Christmas approached, the family faced additional pressures. After covering funeral costs and legal fees to secure custody of Karl’s children, there were understandable concerns about how they would provide a memorable Christmas for the children.
Once again, Team Solan stepped in to help.
A van arrived filled with Christmas presents for the family. The support came at a time when it was needed most and helped ensure the children could enjoy a special Christmas despite everything they had been through.
One of Karl’s children, Noah, summed up the impact of the charity’s kindness when he said: “This is the best Christmas of my life.”
Honestly the love, support and generosity we have been given has been amazing and I couldn’t recommend Mark and the team enough. They really are true Angels in disguise and we couldn’t of done half of it without them. They really are a special charity and will always hold a place in our hearts. They are amazing.
